The AFRINO is a low-maintenance, dual-purpose sheep with fine to medium white wool, genetically engineered for natural bare breech, smooth body, high lambing percentages, smaller lambs at birth, and excellent maternal traits. Bailup Downs Afrinos are carefully selected, culled for breed traits, and wool tested. They are ideal for prime lamb production and improving lambing percentages in other breed flocks such as the Merino.

AFRINOS were genetically engineered over 30 years to have the following traits:
-
- A natural bare breech – no mulesing required.
- A smooth body – bare on legs
- High lambing percentages in excess of 150%
- Smaller lambs at birth, less complications for multiple births
- Excellent mothers, protective, calm, high milk production
Bailup Downs Afrinos have been carefully selected for not only these breed traits, but special attention has been taken within the Bailup Downs stud in the selection of rams with fine white wool. The stud culls any rams/ewes not keeping to the pure Afrino breed traits. Plus, all ram lambs are wool tested – in the 2022 drop (Tested in 2023 at 12 months – 7 months wool growth) the average micron was 18.3 with a 69.9 yield with an average comfort factor of 99.9%.
WHY A BAILUP DOWNS AFRINO RAM:
A Bailup Downs Afrino ram produces top maternals for the Prime Lamb industry. Creating F1 or F2, F3, F4 maternals or to F5 for a pure Afrino ewe
A Bailup Downs Afrino ram is ideal for putting over Merino ewes to not only produce a Prime Lamb but increase lambing percentages, keep the Merino type fine white wool within the flock and to move towards a non mulesed flock with reduced fly strike.
